Displaying Transformed Neighborhoods

After a two-year hiatus, the Edible Flint Food Garden Tour is back and will take place Wednesday, August 3, from 4 to 8 p.m. The tour will start and end at the Flint Farmer’s Market located in downtown Flint. Community members are invited to join in this annual celebration of the work of food gardeners all over the city and stay after the tour for mingling and a celebration of local food.

Program director Kelly McClelland says, “Genesee County residents are improving their health, reducing their weekly grocery bill and transforming their neighborhoods by creating urban gardens in both their own yards and on neighboring vacant lots. Participants will learn firsthand how local residents of all ages are transforming community concerns, such as vacant land, into valuable neighborhood assets. With more than 12,000 vacant residential lots in Flint alone, residents now have more opportunities than ever to turn available properties into productive places.”

Participants will be transported to the garden sites by bus or bicycle and will have a chance to meet the gardeners and farmers and learn more about their growing methods, successes and challenges. Edible Flint is a nonprofit organization that supports Flint and Genesee County residents in growing and accessing healthy food in order to reconnect with the land and each other.
